LENTEN FAITH SHARING GROUPS

Lenten faith sharing groups will meet every week of Lent on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Please consult the calendar section for times and places.

This week we will reflect on the sin of historically systemic racism that has plagued America since its founding. A sense of “white” supremacy governed European settlers in their relationships with native Americans and with Africans brought here as slaves; the very concepts of “race” and of “white people” are social constructs that were created to justify the empowerment of some people and the disempowerment of others.    As a result, the pervasive character of racism shows itself in implicit or unconscious bias that almost everyone has and that is reflected  in people’s behavior.

All parishioners are encouraged to take the “Race Implicit Association Test” to see how our own attitudes have been shaped by societal prejudices.  Go online to: https:/ implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html and click on the button labeled “Race IAT” to take the racial Implicit Association Test. This test will attempt to measure a person’s level of implicit (that is, unconscious) bias in regard to white people and black people.   We can address and try to change only those problems that we are aware of.

Those participating in the group sharing sessions will focus on Ch. 3 and 5 of Wallis’ book this week, particularly pages 33-35 and 73-75.

Anyone with questions, or who is still looking for a book may contact Mary Jureller at 315 382-8039.

Thank You!

Our Confirmation class thanks all those who donated to the “Souper Bowl” project. We delivered and shelved 3 carloads of canned goods. We also had a tour of the facility and a taste of all the wonderful programs they run. This is certainly a place where some of us will share our time and talent with the children served there.
